Essa Flory Hospice Center

Lancaster, PA

This was Pennsylvania’s first freestanding in-patient hospice facility.  The owner invited our design team to challenge conventional wisdom associated with skilled care design and create an environment that would look like, act like, feel like home.  The owner, architect and contractor worked together to reinvent the programmatic and visual interpretation of skilled care to offer an appropriate and meaningful end of life experience.  The 12-bed Essa Flory Hospice Center received numerous national awards for design excellence and remains a hallmark of preferred design for palliative care facilities in the United States.  The design success led to the need for a second larger hospice care center, modeled after the initial design.  The Essa Flory Center is now used for outpatient palliative care and staff training.

Awards:  Published in the Design for Aging Review, a joint design awards program and publication by the American Institute of Architects and the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging, National Award of Excellence in Construction, Associated Builders and Contractors, Gold Award; Annual Symposium of the Center for Health Design’s Environment Award for New Construction, Published:  Contract Design Magazine
