James Douglas to Speak on Drawing Architecture at Notre Dame

RLPS Designer and Illustrator James Douglas will present a paper at Art of Architecture: Hand Drawing and Design.  The three-day conference is sponsored by the University of Notre Dame School of Architecture and draws together architects, architectural historians, educators, and students to explore the role of hand drawing in architectural history, education, and practice.  His presentation The Drawing Discipline: Earning Our Inheritance will focus on how contemporary architects and designers can strengthen their drawing abilities and propel themselves confidently into uncharted territory by studying and practicing the drawing methods of past masters.

Adiron-DECK the Halls

The twist for this display was that in lieu of gingerbread, our primary building material was pretzels! This year’s display utilizes over thirty unique pretzel shapes and 120 sheets of gingerbread and 40 gallons of icing produced by the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center, along with 20 pounds of rock candy, 15 pounds of salt, and 50 pounds of miscellaneous colored candies!   Another important “building material” was 10+ pounds of fondant which was used to mold a variety of objects, animals and people populating our Adirondack village, camp, and lodge.  This year’s display is loosely modeled after a traditional upstate New York Adirondack mountain town with an old-fashioned grand lodge resort.

The annual tradition, which began in 1988, involves employees, family, and friends who volunteer for hours of creative confectionery construction.  Beginning just before Thanksgiving, participants spent many evenings and weekends pulling everything together in time for our client party in early December.

Winning houses and accessories are pictured: Houses: 1st Gershwin’s Getaway, 2nd Moose Lodge, 3rd Holy Smoke.  Accessories: 1st Ski if You Can Survive, 2nd Dog Sleigh, 3rd A Bridge Too Far.
