DESIGN INTERVENTION NOVEMBER – K IS FOR KEYSTONE

As we cruise through the alphabet exploring architectural terms, this month focuses on keystones. The keystone is the most important component of an arch.  However, it is also the component that endures no stress; typically responsibility and stress go hand in hand.  A keystone is the wedge at the top of an arch upon which all the other components lean.  Keystones are usually masonry in either cut stone, cast stone or brick.  The key design feature is the last piece set in place and locks all others into position, thus allowing the arch to bear weight.  The keystone is one of three components that comprise an arch:  the springer, the voussoir and the keystone or headstone.  To read the full article from LNP News CLICK HERE.
