DESIGN INTERVENTION OCTOBER: VERGEBOARD

The closer we get to the end of the alphabet, the more challenging it has become to find interesting words to represent the remaining letters. V could be for vault, vestibule or voussoir, but vergeboard is our word for the month.

The vergeboard is the wide decorative trim board attached to the projecting gable of a roof. Of medieval origin, the original purpose of the vergeboard was to protect the exposed ends of roof framing timbers that projected beyond the face of the wall.  The root of the name relates to the definition of ‘verge’ meaning the end or edge of something.
